Physical Environment

Landscape

Corambirra Point is a seaward extension of Brooklana formation rocks which consist of siliceous argillite, slate and rarer siliceous greywacke (Geological Series Sheet SH 56 – 10 & 11).

To the south is North Boambee Beach and to the north is the Coffs Harbour embayment, which has been produced by the construction of an artificial breakwall extending from the beach in front of Coffs Harbour Jetty out to Muttonbird Island.

Currents, Winds and Waves

Studies indicate (MHL693 1994, MHL453 1983, MHL387 1984, MHL460 1988):

  • ‘bias’ towards effluent drifting in an easterly direction along Corambirra Point close to the rocks.

  • depending on swell size and wind direction, some of the effluent may swing south and entered the surf zone with subsequent rapid transport to the shoreline.

  • when winds are from the east to southwest (52% of the time), current patterns would result in diluted effluent being transported in an offshore direction.

  • current speeds have a 50%ile of 0.13 m/s and an 84%ile of 0.30 m/s.
